I’m Martha, a mom of two neurodiverse kids in Los Angeles. When my kids were diagnosed I struggled to know what to do. I felt like I walked out of our first neuropsychological assessment feeling devastated. My kids were preschool aged and already I was so worried. Would they make it through school? Can they be educated in a public school? What are all these issues my kids are having and how will I make it through this? We attended all kinds of therapy - occupational therapy, physical therapy, we did applied behavioral analysis and social skills classes.
As my kids reached school age things changed. Now we were dealing with the school system and IEPs, or Individualized Education Plans. It took me about two whole IEP meetings to even fully understand the process. In that first meeting, I wished I had a friend who had been there before to turn to and ask questions. |
